Explore Wellington with Dollar

Wellington is a fantastic city to explore while you’re here. We recommend spending at least a few days seeing what the capital of New Zealand is all about. From the rich history and culture of the city to the delicious food and views, Wellington is a city that always has something to do, see, or explore.

Cuba Street is one of the most-loved and best-known streets in New Zealand. It’s full of culture, exciting discoveries, and has something on for everyone. Taking centre stage is the Bucket Fountain. It’s a fountain that is made from colourful buckets: the sight and sound of the fountain will capture your attention, as will the sounds of the surprise splashes onto people as they walk past. It’s a firm favourite location for anyone exploring what Cuba Street has to offer: and it’s free, meaning everyone can enjoy it, too.

If movies and culture are more to your liking, then Wellington is an excellent destination. The Lord of the Rings franchise was filmed throughout New Zealand, and one of the main locations was Wellington. In fact, the Weta Workshop, which is located just outside of Wellington is where many of the props and costumes were made. Here, you can stand with life size orcs, meet trolls, and understand the process of how these incredible movies came to life.

Head to the South Island with Dollar

The South Island is just 3.5-half hours away by ferry. The journey from Wellington to Picton is beautiful, and you can excitedly marvel at the scenery of the incoming South Island while you travel across the Cook Strait.

When in Picton, the whole of the South Island is waiting for you to explore. We recommend heading to the Marlborough region for a beautiful introduction to the South Island. Home to some of the finest wines in the world, the Marlborough region has incredible scenery, famous vineyards, and great walking tracks, too. We recommend starting your vacation stop here by taking a cruise of the Marlborough Sounds: the most idyllic areas are only accessible by boat, so purchase a ticket and enjoy the views.

Wellington Ferry is a fantastic location to start your New Zealand vacation. Whether you want to stay in Wellington for a while, head north to explore the island, or take the ferry into the South Island, there are so many options waiting for you to explore. We look forward to welcoming you here soon, at Dollar Wellington Ferry.
