Car Rental Auckland Downtown

New Zealand is a famous location, renowned for its volcanic activity, mountainous landscapes, and wild, rugged coastline. It’s the backdrop to many films - notably, the Lord of the Rings franchise, where glimpses of this island beauty are captured on film. It’s clear to see why many are so captivated by this country as soon as you arrive in Auckland; everywhere you look is simply breathtaking.

The climate in Auckland is mild and temperate. With warmer summers and colder winters, you’ll have to come prepared for the season you visit - remember, the seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere. New Zealand itself is separated into two islands, and Auckland is in the north: while it’s a city location, the CBD is just a short drive away from some wild beauty.

It’s not easy to travel around New Zealand without a car. However, thanks to your Dollar rental, you can take to adventuring with ease. Whether your vacation will stay in the North Island, or you’ll eventually travel to the South Island, it can all be done easily, with Dollar.

Adventure from Auckland, with Dollar

Auckland is actually quite close to a Lord of the Rings top attraction: Hobbiton. Indeed, just a two-hour drive on State Highway 1 from Auckland is one of the most famous film sets in the world. Here, you can discover what life was like for the Hobbits of Hobbiton and learn about the famous movie franchise. It’s a whole new world to discover (literally). You can take plenty of pictures while you’re there, dress up in costumes, and even buy a pie to eat in the on-set pub, too!

Drive south of Auckland and you will reach Rotorua. Rotorua is an impressive destination for anyone looking to learn about Māori culture and history, as well as discover plenty about New Zealand’s geothermal activity. Marvel at the geysers, relax in the hot springs and experience traditional Māori culture while you’re here. Indeed, there are even traditional Māori stays that you can do while staying in Rotorua, where you’ll learn about the history, traditions, ceremonies, and finish the night with traditional hangi cooking.

Another film experience waiting to be discovered is at the Coromandel Peninsula, just a 2.5-hour drive outside of Auckland CBD. Here, you’ll find Hahai, Hot Water Beach, and Cathedral Cove. Eagle-eyed fans will realise that Cathedral Cove was featured in the Narnia movie franchise. It’s an incredibly beautiful spot and one that is favoured by both tourists and locals. Hot Water Beach is also a firm favourite - make sure to dig yourself a spot and experience the naturally heated water that floods in from below the earth’s surface.
